Our Projects
World War I Project
2014 – 2018
Flesh on the Bones
In 2014 a group of our members began a project to find the story behind each of the local men named on the Silverdale, Puhoi and Upper Waiwera cenotaphs and make them available on our website for anyone to read. We wanted future generations to have a record of these men, and their service to New Zealand to be remembered and accessible.
In the process we have learned a great deal about the history, not only of the men, but their families and the settlement of the Rodney area in the 19th and 20th century. We also have a better appreciation of the wars geopolitical and personal impact on New Zealanders who lived through it. We owe it to them to record their stories and remember their deeds both at home and abroad.
We have not been able to find photos of all the soldiers named. If you have a photo you’d like to contribute please contact us
